stress basic/key things Flashcards
stress
physical and psychological response to stressors that challenge homeostasis
corticolimbic system
determines possible threat and processes emotion
WHERE STRESS IS PROCESSED!
Primary indentifier
determines if there is a threat and at what magnitude
secondary identifier
evaluates ways to cope with stressor
eustress
stress that’s beneficial (joy, sense of happiness)
Ap-Ap
between two things you want to do
Av-Av
between 2 things you don’t want to do
Ap-Av
between something you want to do and something you don’t
want stereo, but must work to get it and work ew
Double Ap-Av
between two things with both positive and negative factors
optimal arousal theory
peak performance related to amount of stress!
good for easy tasks, bad for complex tasks
physiology of the stress response
are processed in the CORTICOLIMBIC SYSTEM
when threat, message sent to PNS for prepare for movement
Message also sent to hypothalamus which controls the autonomic nervous system, and the sympathetic nervous system is activated
hypothalamus communicates with endocrine system to activate the adrenocortical and adrenomedullary system
adenocortical
releases cortisol to increase SNS activity
suppresses immune response, increase release of stored fat
adrenomedullary
releases adrenaline
General Adaptation syndrome
Alarm – SNS activated
Resistance – Body uses hormones to keep system elevated
Exhaustion–resources are depleted, body is exhausted
long-term impact of cortisol
suppresses immune system and can disrupt sleep
more likely to become stick
