Helps fight off infections and wounds
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
Body’s 3 phases in response to stress:
Alarm Reaction: nervous system is ready to fight back (fight or flight)
Resistance: Summons all resources to meet challenges. Stress and body levels are high
Exhaustion: becomes even more vulnerable to illness, defense breaks down
Type A Personality
competitive towards achievement, urgency about time, strong tendency to feel angry or hostile
Type B Personality
Low levels of competitiveness, urgency about time, and hostility. calm and relaxed
Stress
Factors in the environment that causes a person to feel threatened or challenged in some way
How stress affects your health
Stress can increase diseases and infections and can be detrimental to someones health
Hardiness
immune to effects of stress. sense of commitment rather than isolation. problems seen as challenges rather than threats
Social Support
Feeling liked and encouraged by intimate friends and family
Appraisal
Assess an event and see how much it influences how much stress we experience and how we respond
Coping
Alleviating stress using emotional, cognitive, or behavioral methods. ex. aerobic exercises, optimism, relaxation, etc.
Optimism
Consider challenges, find an explanation of outcome. Challenge with examination of facts.
