Stress Flashcards
What is the manifestation of stress?
An autonomic response
What are the different stress responses?
General Adaptation Syndrome
Alarm
Resistance
Exhaustion
What is the physiological response to stress?
Enlargement of adrenal cortex
Enlargement of lymphatic system
Increase in hormone levels - epinephrine, leading to increased physical arousal
What is the behavioural response to stress?
Increased sensitivity to changes in stressor intensity
Increased susceptibility to illness
What is the physiological response to alarm?
Enlargement of adrenal cortex
Enlargement of lymphatic system
Increase in hormone levels - epinephrine, leading to increased physical arousal
What is the behavioural response to alarm?
Increased sensitivity to changes in stressor intensity
Increased susceptibility to illness
What is the physiological response to resistance?
Shrinkage of adrenal cortex
Lymph nodes return to normal size
High hormone levels continue
Parasympathetic branch of autonomic nervous system attempts to counteract high levels of arousal
What are the behavioural response to resistance?
Sensitivity to stress is increased
Attempts are made to endure the stressor and resist further debilitating effects
What is the physiological response to exhaustion?
Lymphatic structures become enlarged or dysfunctional or both
Hormone levels are further increased or maintained at high levels
Adaptive hormones are depleted
What is the behavioural response to exhaustion?
Resistance to stressors is reduced
Individual may become depressed
May become physically ill
