- Primary appraisal: evaluation of an event as stressful or not stressful
- Secondary appraisal: occurs after the event has been evaluated as a threat

A
Describes the reactions after the organism has been exposed to threat

3 phases of GAS
A
- Alarm reaction: body prepares for fight or flight
- Stage of resistance: The body secrets high levels of hormones to assist in response to the stressor
- Exhaustion stage: body resources are exhausted, leading to breakdown, anxiety or illness

- Acute stress: reaction to immediate threat and results in fight or flight
- Intermittent stress: stress that occurs over a period of time
- Chronic stress: on-going stressful situations

- Frustration: occurs when people are prevented from attaining their objectives
- Conflicts: occurs when people want to satisfy a number of needs at the same time
- Pressure: occurs because of the social expectations on people

- Adaptive reacfions: behaviors that help to manage our daily hassles
- Problem-focused coping: identify the stress, confront it & manage the stress
- Emotional-focused coping: prevent negative emotions and boost your self-control
- Avoidance-withdrawal coping: isolate yourself from others
