What does the AMYGDALA do to tackle a threat?
Sends a distress signal
What does the HYPOTHALAMUS do to tackle a threat?
Acts as a control centre
How does fight or flight make sense ?
It is an evolutionary survival mechanism for physical danger. But now it is activated by psychological or emotional stressors which is less helpful for things like public speaking.
What is EUSTRESS and what does it mean for us?
“Good stress”
It is challenging, exciting, and motivating. It is under control and within our coping abilities. It improves our performance and gives us a sense of self-efficacy and mastery.
What is DISTRESS and how does it impact us?
“Bad stress”
It is threatening and unpleasant. When we have no control, it is beyond our coping abilities. It decreases our performance and has a negative impact on our health and well-being.
What is “Repressive Coping”? Is it good or harmful.
Ignoring the stressor: “i hope this goes away”
This is harmful if used long term. It can increase risks of high blood pressure.
What is “Rational coping”. Is it good or harmful ?
Facing the stressor and working to overcome it:
1. Acceptance that the stressor is there and is not going away on its own.
2. Exposure to the stressor through thoughts and experiences
3. Understanding the meaning the stressor has in one’s life
What is “reframing”?
Finding a new way to think about a stressor
What are well-known stress management techniques?
Relaxation
Guided imagery
Mindfulness
Physical activity
Social support
