early adversity:
umbrella term that refers to many different kinds of difficult early life experiences
early adversity research studies:
retrospective studies and prospective studies
retrospective studies:
find people who are depressed and ask them if they experienced early adversity. influenced by recall bias
prospective studies:
select a sample of children from family services and follow up to see if there are differences between who maltreated and those who were not

interviewers get info about about the stressor and present info to a group of raters who determine how stressful the average person in the circumstances would find the event
kindling
paradigm with lab animals where you administer repeated electric shocks until seizure, then do it with less and less shock and eventually they’ll have seizures without any shocks
sensitization theory:
expose animals to lots of stressful stimuli and continue to elicit response to the stressor at lower and lower levels

non-specific active suicidal ideation:
thoughts of killing oneself but not specific plans
specific active suicidal ideation:
having thoughts of suicide along with at least one method of how one would do so
imminent risk:
has intention to carry out suicidal ideation
ladder approach:
ask one question about suicide and if they answer yes, ask the next. if yes to questions, then imminent risk
