Streptococcus pneumoniae Flashcards
Streptococcus pneumoniae
α-hemolytic, Gram+ diplococci
Streptococcus pneumoniae
Which type are virulent
Only encapsulated strains
(smooth colonies) are
virulent
Pneumococcal pneumonia
EPI:
Trt:
High carrier rates for s. pneumoniae
Vaccine Available.
Usually Penicillin
Klebsiella pneumonia
EPI:
TRT
Resistant to AB
Fatal nosocomial
No Vaccine!
Mycoplasmal pneumonia
TRT
No Vaccine
S.pneumoniae virulence factors
α-hemolysis (erythocyte lysis by pneumolysin (cholesterol-dependent action),
hemoglobin destruction)
(pneumolysin also suppresses oxidative burst in phagocytes)
capsule (>90 serotypes) is antiphagocytic and its anti-complement features facilitate
bacteremia (presence in blood circulation) and thus
spreading to other tissues like brain (meningitis)*, peritonitis, arthritis, endocarditis
Some 40% of bacterial otitis may be caused by S.pneumococcus
secretory IgA protease
