Strength Training Flashcards
What are the five types of strength
Static strength
Dynamic strength
Strength endurance
Maximum strength
Explosive/elastic strength
What is static strength
The ability to apply a force against a resistant without any movement occurring (an isometric contraction) so the muscle length remains constant
What is dynamic strength
The ability to apply a force to overcome a resistance where movement occurs (an isotonic contraction) so the muscle length changes
What is strength endurance
The ability to sustain repeated muscular contractions for a single isometric contraction over a period of time
What is maximum strength
The ability to produce a maximum amount of force in a singular muscular contraction
What is explosive/elastic strength
The ability to produce a maximal amount of force in one or a series of rapid muscular contractions
What are the factors that affect strength
How does it affect strength
The muscle fibre types being recruited
The cross sectional area of the muscle
Age
Gender
If the cross sectional area is larger the greater strength or force of contraction
What is the test for strength endurance
Abdominal curl test
Press up test
What is the tests for maximum strength
1rep max
Grip strength dynamometer
What is the explosive strength test
Vertical jump test
