Strength Stiffness and Stability Flashcards
1
Q
Define Strength
A
The Structure must carry the applied load without fracture
2
Q
Define Stiffness
A
The Structure must be stiff enough such that only Allowable Deformation Occurs
3
Q
Define Stability
A
The Structures ability to maintain its equilibrium and resist and external forces or loads.
Must not collapse through buckling
buckling - sudden change in component shape
4
Q
What is the Difference Between Yield Strength ,Tensile Strength and Ultimate Tensile Strength?
A
Yield Strength - Stress which a Material begins to deform plastically
Tensile Strength - Maximum Stress that a material can withstand before it Fractures
Ultimate Tensile Strength and Tensile Strength Mean the same thing
