A
Cook shop, existed in both Herculaneum and Pompeii
- Dolia jars sunk into the counter
- L-shaped counter with space behind it for 1-2 people to serve customers
- Over 120 found in Pompeii and Herculaneum, shows that food shops were an important industry

Roads
A
- Usually paved with large slabs of volcanic stone
- Slightly raised in the centre for water runoff
Herculaneum
- Narrower roads
- No stepping stones
Pompeii
- Wider streets, with main avenues up to 7m wide
- Pavement raised on the side, with stepping stones bridging the two sides of the street so that vehicles can pass but pedestrians can also step across

Present in both Pompeii and Herculaneum

Architecture (mostly Herculaneum but also Pompeii)

- Houses level with footpaths, no frontyards
- Monumental doorways of houses
- Benches for clients in Herculaneum
- Lower parts of houses painted red in both cities
- Graffiti provides insight into what shops sold, also evidences that many people were literate
- Shops sometimes had awnings
- Groove evident where doors pulled across at night
