A

Blanche + Stella - privileged family, since it found itself of the losing end of American Civil War, it lost its power and values became outdated. Whilst still important to Blanche (Southern Belle), Stella has adapted to New American society.

A

Stanley - new generation of Americans seized power, in cities such as New Orleans, is now associated with power and vitality. Citizens are less refined and unconcerned with manners or chivalrous behaviour - egalitarian (all people are equal)

A

Growing city where people of different cultures and races worked and socialised together. Setting of New America, cosmopolitan, everyone is striving to achieve success based on merits, regardless of background.

What are relationships between men and women (1940s)?

A

Stanley presented as having upper hand, man and woman occupy traditional gender roles. Blanche idea to appeal to Shep Huntleigh for financial support reflects limited choice for women, and dependence on men.
