Human Development Index (HDI)
Measures each country’s social and economic development by focusing on three factors: life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators.
Discourse
A way of talking, thinking, or representing a particular topic that contains valuable information about that topic.
Orientalism
A way of The West differentiating itself from The Rest; The West’s way of gaining control/dominance over the Orient (The Global South/The Rest)
Economic Growth
A continued increase in the size of an economy.
Sustainable Development Goals
A universal plan to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure world peace by 2030.
Internally Displaced People (IDPs)
Persons forced to leave their homes as a result of fleeing violence.
Direct Foreign investment
An investment in the form of a controlling ownership in a business in one country by an entity based in another country.
Social capital
Networks of relationships among people who live and work in a particular society, enabling that society to function effectively.
Structural violence
social structures (economic, political, legal, religious, and cultural) that stop individuals, groups, and societies from reaching their full potential and create human suffering.
Conflicted and fragile states
A group of countries or territories which are categorized by the World Bank’s Fragile, Conflict and Violence group according to their financial and security status.
Gender Development Index
A measure of gender inequalities in achievement in three basic dimensions of human development.
Representation
The action of speaking/acting on behalf of someone.
Clientelism
A social order that depends upon relations or patronage; in particular, a political approach that emphasizes or explains such relations.
Social Categories
The process that groups individuals based on social information; the “Big Three” categorizations being sex, race, and age.
ODA
Official Devlopment Assistance. Government aid that targets the economic development and welfare of developing countries.
