STP Flashcards
1
Q
SPT (Spanning Tree Protocol) 802.1d
A
- Permits redundant links between switches
- Prevents looping of network trafficc
2
Q
SPB (Shortest Path Bridging)
A
Used instead of STP for larger network environments
3
Q
Root Bridge
A
- Switch acts as a reference point for STP
- Lowest BID (Bridge ID)
4
Q
BID (Bridge ID)
A
- Made up of a Priority Value and a MAC
- Lowest value is the Root Bridge
5
Q
Root Port
A
- Assigned on every non-root bridge
- Port cloest to the root bridge in cost and port number
6
Q
Designated Port
A
- Every network segment has a designated port which is the closes to the root bridge in terms of cost
- All ports on the root bridge are designated ports
7
Q
Non-Designated Ports
A
- Block traffic loops
- If a link in the topology goes down it will detect that failure and determine whether or not to transition itself into a forwarding state and become a designated port or a root port.
8
Q
Blocking
A
BPDUs are received but not forwarded
9
Q
Listening
A
Populates the MAC address table but does not forward frames
10
Q
Learning
A
- Processes BPDUs
- This is where it determins its role in the spanning tree
11
Q
Forwarding
A
Forwards frames for opertations
12
Q
Link Cost
A
- Associated with the speed of the link
- The lower the speed the higher the cost
