What is the theme of a story?
Idea, belief, moral, lesson, or insight. What you are learning from the story.
What is the protagonist?
The main character
What is the antagonist?
The “villain”, the person against the protagonist.
what is the plot?
A plot consists of the events that happen in the story. Parts of a plot: introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, conclusion.
What is the setting?
Where and when the story is set. Can be a time, place, or both.
What is the conflict?
A challenge or problem around where the plot is based. Every plot must have a conflict.
What is the tone?
Overall emotional “tone” or meaning of the story. (ex. happy, sad, etc)
What is the style?
How things are “said”. Word choices, sentence structure, dialogue, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, etc.
What is the introduction?
The exposition stage of the plot. Setting, characters, goals, etc are introduced.
What is the rising action?
Where the story “gets exciting” and more events come up, and the main character starts to take more action.
What is the climax?
The “turning point” in the story- the central struggle. Protagonist faces the main challenge.
What is the falling action?
The action winds down and the story starts to “wrap up” The results or consequences of the protagonist’s actions are revealed.
What is the conclusion?
The goal/or/problem is resolved and the conflict (and the story) ends.
