What is simile?
A comparison of two unlike things using as or like.
What is metaphor?
A comparison of two unlike things without using like or as.
What is onomatopoeia?
The use of a word that imitates sound.
What is personification?
Giving non-human things human-like characteristics.
What is hyperbole?
An extreme exaggeration used for effect.
What is alliteration?
The repetition of the same consonant or vowel sound at the start of words.
What is an oxymoron?
Words or a phrase that combine opposite ideas.
What is a paradox?
Words or a phrase that combine opposite ideas with one element of truth in it.
What is imagery?
figurative language using the five senses to create metaphors, similes, personification, vivid descriptions to produce mental pictures.
What is an allusion?
An indirect reference to a well-known person, place, thing, or event from history, literature, mythology, or the bible.
What is denotation?
The literal or dictionary meaning of the word.
What is connotation?
The implied meaning of a words based on emotional associations with it.
What is parody?
Any work which humorously ridicules a particular style or literary composition through imitation purely for entertainment.
What is satire?
Any work which ridicules people, ideas, or institutions to make a point for reform.
What is a refrain?
Lines of poetry that are repeated at regular intervals within the poem.
