Storms And Weather Flashcards
What is a stationary front
When cold and warm air meet but they cannot move eachother, they stay in place. Can bring cloud and precipitation for days because it is unable to move.
What is a cold front
Cold air goes under warm air pushing it up in the process. If the warm air is humid or full of moisture? Heavy rainfall may occur
What is an occluded front
To masses of cold air push against a warm air mass on both sides pushing it up.
What is a warm front
Fast moving warm air mass pushes over a cold air mass causing clouds and precipitation.
What is a storm
A violent disturbance in the atmosphere. They involve sudden changes in air pressure making rapid air movements.
What is a thunderstorm
A thunderstorm is a small storm with rain and lightning.
How is thunderstorm formed
Thunderstorms are formed by warm humid air rising rapidly within a cumulonimbus cloud.
What is thunder
The rapid heating of the air by lightning explosively
What are maritime air masses
Air masses formed over the sea
What are continental air masses
Air masses formed over land
What are Maritime tropical and continental tropical air masses
They are air masses coming from the south on the sea or land. Maritime tropical are warm humid air masses and continental tropical hot Dry air masses.
What are continental and maritime polar air masses
Air masses that come from the northern seas or land. Maritime polar are cool humid air masses. Continental polar are very dry air masses
