Exploding comfortably - oxymoron, exploding is quite a violent term contrasting with comfortably, poet is suggesting that because the violence is far off you feel more secure. Juxtaposes feelings of fear and safety

‘Spits like a tame cat turned savage’ - smilie, comforting and familiar things are becoming frightening during the storm, danger

‘Huge nothing that we fear’ - juxtaposition, our perception is not as dangerous as reality, storm is invisible there’s nothing solid there.
