Key themes/ surface meaning
a powerful ruler who sees himself as a ‘king of kings’, perhaps a great warrior and one of the most powerful men in the world. The poem is almost being ironic, pointing out that now all that remains is an arrogant boast on a ruined statue.

Metaphor for the fragility of human power, self importance is short lived and arrogance and pride are unwise. Misuse of power

the hand that mocked them- metaphor, hands are symbolic to doing actions, he choose to be dismissive and his deeds are belittling

Sneer of cold command - alliteration, cruelty, powerful and arrogant ironic now there is nothing left
