Storm hazards Flashcards
What conditions need to be in place for a storm to occur?
sea temp above 27 degrees (provides continuous source of heat)
ocean depth of at least 70m (moisture provides latent heat)
location at least 5 degrees north and 5 degrees south of the equator ( Coriolis force can cause rotating air)
low level convergence of air in the lower atmospheric circulation ( winds have to come together near centre of low pressure zone)
Rapid outflow of air in upper atmospheric circulation (pushes away warm air which has risen)
Where do tropical storms occur?
between 5 and 20 degrees north and south of the equator and they move westwards
How long do storms last?
7- 14 days
How is the magnitude of the tropical storms measured?
On the Saffir Simpson scale a 5 point scale
What are the factors affecting impacts of tropical storms?
intensity of the storm speed of movement distance from sea physical geography of coastal area preparations warnings
What are the major impacts?
winds: exceed 150km / hr
cause structural damage to buildings
Can Bring down electricity lines and fling debris
Heavy rainfall: 200- 300mm
create severe flooding, landslides and mudslides
storm surge: high sea levels
What are methods if protection?
have cyclone/ hurricane drills
Land use planning
sea walls and flood barriers
retrofitted buildings
