Stores, Flows and Processes Flashcards
4 Stores of water
- Resevoir
- Ocean
- Ice
- Groundwater
3 flows of water
- Through flow
- Groundwater flow
- Surface Run off
6 processes of water
- Evaporation
- Precipitation
- Condensation
- Transpiration
- Interception
- Infilltration
Through flow
Water that flows through the layer of soil
Groundwater Flow
Water flowing through cracks in rock and sands under the layer of soil
Surface run off
Water that flows over the surface of the earth (usually impermeable areas) and goes into the river
Evaporation
Water that is heated into a gas from the oceans and rises into the clouds (The opposite of condensation)
Precipitation
When evaporation becomes water again and falls to the earth as Rain, Snow or Hail
Condensation
Where water vapour in the clouds returns into water (The opposite of evaporation)
Transpiration
When water from plants is heated and rises as Water Vapour (Similar to evaporation) however stagnant water does not need to be present
Interception
When precipitation does not reach the ground but is caught by the leaves of plants and trees
Infiltration
When surface ground water enters the soil
