Storage Types Flashcards
1
Q
What is Volatile and Non-Volatile Storage? and provide examples.
A
- Volatile Storage is data that gets saved to RAM temporarily to be used, if a computer is powered off; the contents of data will be erased from Memory.
- Non-Volatile Stoage is data that gets saved to permanent storage devices such as HDD and SSD.
- HDD’s contain magnetic material that spin around quickly inside where a head reads and writes magnetic charges to the platter.
- SSD’s use stored electric charges to store a bit in flash memory cells and contains less moving parts.

Q
What is Flash Memory?
A
Is the same as SSD’s but easily removable and has less capacity for storage than an SSD.
3
Q
What is Optical Storage?
A
Optical storage is a device that uses lasers to encode data onto a disk such as CD or DVD.
Once considered to be Non-Volatile form of storage
