Storage Media Flashcards
1
Q
Optical media
A
- DVD/CD
- Blu Ray
- Disc games
2
Q
Advantage of optical media
A
- Can store a lot of data
- Portable
- Low cost per bit of storage
- Long media life
- High data stability
3
Q
Downside of optical media
A
- The discs can easily be scratched or damaged potentially loosing all of the data stored on them
- Slower data transferring rate
- Required specific drives to to write data to the discs
4
Q
Solid state
A
•USB Stick
•
5
Q
Advantages of solid state
A
- Portable
- Has no moving parts meaning that less can break with the storage device
- Faster than hard disk drives
- Faster than a HDD
6
Q
Downside of solid state
A
- Can’t handle extreme heat
- More expensive than hard disk drives
- Poor availability
- Shorter lifespan than hard disk drives
7
Q
Magnetic media
A
•Hard drive
8
Q
Advantage of magnetic media
A
- Large and increasing capacity
- High transferring speed
- No data loss when device is powered off (non-volatile)
9
Q
Downside of magnetic media
A
- Often a larger device compared to a USB solid state drive making it less portable
- Possible damages to data loss to to ‘head’ crash
- Will eventually break due to it being mechanical
10
Q
Paper
A
Simply using paper as a data storage device
