Storage Media Flashcards
What are the four types of storage media?
Paper, optical, magnetic and solid state
What’s the difference between storage medium and storage media?
Storage medium is one method of storage but storage media is multiple methods of storage
What are two pros to storing information on paper?
No need for electricity/internet and confidential information can be easily locked away
What are two cons to storing information on paper?
Hard to convert or reuse and paper takes up a lot of physical space
What are three examples of optical media?
CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray
What are two pros of optical media storage?
Reliable and portable
What are two cons of optical media storage?
Need a disc drive to use and slower read/write speed compared to alternatives
What are three examples of magnetic media storage?
Hard disk drives (HDDs), cassette tapes and swipe cards
What are two pros of magnetic media storage?
Cheap to buy and usually reliable
What are two cons of magnetic media storage?
Generally not durable and has slower read/write times compared to SSDs
What are three examples of solid state storage?
Solid State Disk’s (SSDs), USB memory sticks and memory cards
What are two pros of solid state storage?
Very durable (no moving parts) and generally faster read/write speeds
What are two cons of solid state storage?
Higher cost per GB and can have a limited number of writes
