Internet Connections Flashcards
What is the internet?
A network of interconnected networks which is worldwide
What are five characteristics of the internet?
Latency, bandwidth, range, contention and strength
What does the latency of a network’s connection mean?
How long it takes to get a message (the lower latency the better)
What does the range of a network’s connection mean?
How far away you can be to still use the network reliably (wider range typically better but can lead to more security risks)
What does the strength of a network’s connection mean?
How consistent the network is (closely linked to range)
What does the bandwidth of a network’s connection mean?
How much data can be transferred across the network
What does the contention of a network’s connection mean?
How many devices can use the network and how well it can deal with those multiple devices
What are two wired forms of internet connections?
Copper cable and optical-fibre cable
What are two forms of wireless internet connections?
Wi-Fi and Satellite networks
What’s the advantage of copper cables?
Cheap
What’s the advantage of optical-fibre cables?
Improved bandwidth & range than copper with lower latency
What’s good about Wi-Fi as a connection?
Greater range and bandwidth than similar connection methods such as, Bluetooth
What’s one good and one bad thing about satellite networks?
Satellite networks have a large range but they have high latency
