Storage Flashcards
1
Q
What is optical storage? +/-
A
Uses a laser and by looking at the discs reflection determines where there pits on the surface representing 0's and 1's Eg: CD's, DVD's, and Blu Ray discs \+cheap \+resilient -Limited storage
2
Q
What is Flash storage? +/-
A
Uses a special type of ROM that be overwritten
Eg: SSD’s
+ Read and write very high
+No moving parts = versatile
+Consumes less power
-expensive
-each storage location has limited number of read and writes
Can’t be defragmented due to how often data is being read and written
3
Q
What is virtual storage? +/-
A
Virtual storage is cloud storage \+Large amounts of storage available \+Auto back ups \+Stored 'off site' meaning it will be safe even if main system brakes -You cannot ensure Its security
4
Q
What is magnetic storage? +/-
A
Patterns of magnetisation used to represent binary sequences eg: Hard disk drive
+ High capacity
+low cost
-Not the fastest
-Can be damaged if dropped due to moving parts
