STOMAS Flashcards
WHAT IS A COLOSTOMY?
- surgically created opening into large bowel, connected to removable pouching system that collects output for disposal
- used after section of colon removed and bowel can’t be joined back together
WHERE IS THE LOCATION OF COLOSTOMY?
- left iliac fossa
WHAT ARE THE CONTENTS IN COLOSTOMY?
- solid faeces
WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF A COLOSTOMY?
- flush to skin (not sticking out)
WHAT ARE THE 3 TYPES OF COLOSTOMY AND WHY ARE THEY USED?
1) Permanent end colostomy - large rectal cancers leading to removal of entire rectum
2) Temporary rectal colostomy - rest bowel (tumour obstruction or diverticulitis) after disease part removed. Rectum and bowel re-anastomosed at later date
3) Loop colostomy - protect distal anastomoses after surgery. Loop of bowel brought to surface and half-opened, allowing faecal matter to drain into stoma bag. Two openings.
WHEN ARE COLOSTOMY USED?
- bowel cancer
- Crohn’s disease
- diverticulitis
- anal cancer
WHAT IS AN ILEOSTOMY?
- surgically created opening into small bowel
WHERE IS AN ILEOSTOMY LOCATED?
- RIF
WHAT ARE THE CONTENTS OF AN ILEOSTOMY?
- liquid and light colour
WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF AN ILEOSTOMY?
- spout (sticking out from abdominal wall) - allows faeces to drain without touching skin as enzyme are toxic
WHAT ARE THE 4 TYPES OF ILEOSTOMY?
1) Permanent end ileostomy - after panproctocolectomy (colon, rectum and anal canal) for UC
2) Temporary end ileostomies - emergency bowel resection where unsafe to form anastomosis with remaining bowel at the time.
3) Temporary loop ileostomy - protect distal anastomosis, loop of SI pulled through cut abdomen before being opened and stitched to skin. 2 openings
4) End ileostomy - ileum separates from colon and brought through abdomen
WHEN IS ILEOSTOMY USED?
- bowel cancer
- Crohn’s disease
- UC
WHAT IS A UROSTOMY?
- surgical opening for urinary system following cystectomy (bladder opening)
WHERE IS UROSTOMY LOCATED?
- RIF
WHAT ARE THE CONTENTS OF UROSTOMY?
- urine
