What does a colostomy do?
Connected to large intestine
Drain more solid stools
Flatter to the skin as contents are less irritating to the skin

Connected to ileum
Drain liquid stools

Why does an ileostomy have a spout?
Contents can very easily irritate the skin
What does a gastromy do?
Connected to the stomach
Used to feed patient
What is a urostomy?
Opening from urinary system to the skin

What is an end colostomy?
End part of proximal bowel brought to skin
Faeces drain into stoma bag
Distal part of remaining bowel is sutured and left in abdomen
May be reversed
When are end colostomies permanent?
After resection of abdomino-perineal resection
As entire rectum and anus removed
What is an end ileostomy?
Ileum folded back on itself and fashioned into larger pouch that functions like a rectum
J-pouch then attached to anus and collects stools prior to passing
Permanent after panprotocolectomy
What is a loop colostomy/ileostomy?
Temporary stoma to allow distal portion of bowel and anastomosis to heal after surgery
Reversed 6-8 weeks later
What is a urostomy used for?
Drain urine directly from the kidney
Used after cystectomy
How is a urostomy formed?
Creating an ileal conduit
Part of ileum is removed
Ureters are anastomosed to the separated ileum
Urine drains directly from ureters into urostomy bag
Needs to fit tightly to skin as urine will irritate skin
What are the complications of stomas?
Psycho-social impact
Skin irritation
Parastomal hernia
Loss of bowel length- high output, dehydration, malnutrition
Retraction
Prolapse
