A

End part of proximal bowel brought to skin

Faeces drain into stoma bag

Distal part of remaining bowel is sutured and left in abdomen

May be reversed

A

After resection of abdomino-perineal resection

A

Ileum folded back on itself and fashioned into larger pouch that functions like a rectum

J-pouch then attached to anus and collects stools prior to passing

Permanent after panprotocolectomy

Urine drains directly from ureters into urostomy bag
