What is ileus?
A
Condition affecting the small bowel where peristalsis temporarily stops

What is a pseudo-obstruction?
A
Functional obstruction of the large bowel
Patient presents with intestinal obstruction, no cause is found

What are the common causes of ileus?
A
Bowel injury
Handling bowel during surgery
Inflammation or infection in the bowel
Electrolyte imbalance

What are the signs and symptoms of ileus?
A
Green bilious vomiting
Abdominal distention
Diffuse abdominal pain
Absolute constipation and lack of flatulence
Absent bowel sounds

How is ileus managed?
A
Treat the underlying cause
Supportive care e.g.
NbM
NG tube
IV fluids
Mobilisation
TPN
