Stoichiometry Flashcards
the amount of a substance that contains the same number of particles as atoms in exactly 12 grams of carbon-12.
mole (mol)
The number of particles per mole and is numerically equal to 6.022 x 10^23
Avogadro’s number
The mass in grams of one mole of a substance.
Molar mass
tells us what elements are present in the compound and the simplest whole-number ratio of elements
Empirical Formula
tells which elements are in the compound and the actual number of each.
Molecular (actual) formula
are reversible and causes no change in composition of the substance
Physical change
Involves a change in composition and is usually irreversible
Chemical change
The calculation of the amount (mass, moles, particles) of one substance in a chemical reaction using another substance.
Stoichiometry
The reactant that is completely used up in a chemical reaction
Limiting Reactant
The reactant that is left over in a chemical reaction
Excess reactant
The maximum amount of product formed
Theoretical Yield
The amount of product that is actually formed
Actual Yield
The actual yield divided by the theoretical yield and converted into a percentage
Percent yield
Homogeneous mixtures composed of a solute and a solvent.
Solution
substance present in a solution in smaller amount
Solute
