STM, LTM, Miller study Flashcards
1
Q
capacity meaning
A
amount of info that can be stored in memory, STM is limited but LTM can be infinite
2
Q
duration meaning
A
how long a memory trace can last, LTM can potentially last forever but STM doesn’t last that long
3
Q
coding
A
info has to be ‘written’ in memory in some form, so such as acoustically or etc
4
Q
how can STM be increased
A
chunking method
5
Q
Miller study
A
Miller suggested we have a ‘7 +/ - 2’ capacity of short memory
- told participants to recall a list of numbers or words or pictures
- they then repeated it with a different set of numbers, words or pictures
6
Q
duration of long term (with study)
A
BAHRICK
- studied 395 people in america from ages of 17-74
- asked them to recall from high school yearbooks
- pps who were tested within 15 years of graduation were about 90% accurate
- after 15 years it dropped to 60% and after 48 years it dropped to 30%
7
Q
strengths of Bahricks
A
study looked at REAL and IMPORTANT memories (yearbook photos)
-high external validity
8
Q
weakness of Bahricks
A
- only says high school memories, not LTM in general
- all American, culture differences
