Q

The digit span experiment

A

Jacob’s carried this out to establish the capacity of stm
- he gave ppts a number of digits
- they were required to repeat these out loud
-if they repeated the amount of digits correctly one more was added
- they did this until failure

Q

Peterson and Peterson study

A

-24 undergraduates each took part in 8 trials
-in each trial ppts were given a constant trigram (cvc) to remember but also a three digit number
-ppts were then told to count backwards from that 3 digit number until they were told to stop either after 3,6,9,12,15 or 18 seconds

5
Q

The findings of Peterson and Petersons study

A

After 3 seconds 80% of the trigrams were recalled correctly
After 6 seconds this fell to 50%
After 18 seconds less than 10% of the trigrams were recalled correctly

Q

The duration of ltm

A

Unlimited as shown by Bahrick et al, found that photo recognition of graduating classmates of the 396 ppts decreased from 90% to 70% between 15 years and 46 years of graduating

Q

What did baddeley find out in his research

A

He found that more mistakes were made by ppts than when recalling acoustically similar words straight after learning them, whilst more mistakes were made when recalling semantically similar words 20 mins after learning them
