Multi Store Model Of Memory Flashcards
Who was the msm developed by
Atkinson and shiffrin, includes three separate unitary stores: sensory register, short term memory and long term memory
What is the sensory register
Gathers information from our sense organs- eyes, nose, mouth, ears and touch, has a limited duration of a quarter second to three
If we pay attention to sr what happens
It will pass to short term memory, forgetting occurs due to rapid decay if no attention is given to it
Short term memory
has a limited capacity of 5-9 items and limited duration of 30 secs
What allows information to be held in the stm
Maintenance rehearsal
What transfers info from stm to ltm by processing the info semantically
Elaborate rehearsal. Forgetting occurs from stm due to displacement and decay
Why do we forget ltm
Forgetting occurs due to interference ( proactive and retroactive) and retrieval failure
Evaluation of msm
Clinical studies from patients with Korsakoff’s syndrome who have damage to the ltm but hardly any on stm. KF suffered brain damage, it had no effect of ltm but led to many stm tasks
