Stimulus response process Flashcards
Define stimulus
A stimulus is any change in the internal or external environment
Define receptor
A special type of nerve cell that may be located in sense organs. Different types of receptors respond to particular stimuli.
Sense organs include our eyes, ears, nose tongue and skin.
Identify the 4 different types of receptors
Mechanoreceptors
Chemoreceptors
Thermoreceptors
Photoreceptors
What stimuli do mechanoreceptors respond to and where is it in the body?
- Pressure (touch) and sound
- Skin and ear
What stimuli do chemoreceptors respond to and where is it in the body?
-Chemicals
- Tongue and nose
What stimuli do thermoreceptors respond to and where is it in the body?
-Temperature
- Skin
What stimuli do photoreceptors respond to and where is it in the body?
- Light
- Eye
Define the effector
A muscle, or gland that receives the message from the central nervous system to respond in a particular way.
Their response depends on the original stimulus.
What are the two types of feedback?
NEGATIVE FEEDBACK
Most common
Aims to REDUCE the stimulus
POSITIVE FEEDBACK
Uncommon
Aims to INCREASE the stimulus (take away from homeostasis)
Examples of negative feedback:
Glucose regulation
Temperature regulation
Blood pressure
Blood pH
Recall the process of homeostasis through the stimulus-response model
Stimulus –> Receptor —> Control centre (cns) —> Effector –> Response
