Neuron communication Flashcards
Name the 3 types of neurons
Sensory neuron
Motor neuron
Interneuron
What is the function of the sensory neuron
Carry sensory info about a change in the external or internal environment and from sense organs to the spinal cord and brain (CNS)
E.g. Touch a hot stove - the sensory neurons in your fingertips would tell your CNS that what you touched was hot
What is the function of the motor neuron
Also known as efferent neurons
Carry signals from the interneuron in the CNS to the effector ( muscles and glands ) and causes it to respond
What is the function of the interneuron
Located ONLY in the CNS
Processes impulses in the brain and spinal cord sent by the sensory neuron to a motor neuron
What happens when information reaches the axon terminal?
The information is then sent out to an adjacent neuron.
This relay of information happens through neurotransmitters at the synapse (a gap between two neurons)
How is the adjacent neuron able to receive this information?
Because the receptors on the membrane of the dendrites are able to bind to the neurotransmitter sent out by the other neuron.
