Stimulus control Flashcards
what is the three term contingency
- quickly summarizes operant conditioning
- also known as the ABCs behaviour
- antecedent signal results in behaviour which result in consequences
what are antecedents
a stimuli, event, or situation that precedes behaviour. provides contexts that consequences occurs in. all antecedent are stimuli
4 types of antecedent
- overt antecedent = stimuli directly observable with your senses.
- covert antecedent = stimuli that is not directly observable by other people. internal experiences
- immediate antecedent = occurs right before or overlaps with behaviour. e.g. fire alarm
- distant antecedent = stimuli (often covert) that preceded behaviour a long time ago. can influence behaviour for a long time.
-medication effect, health status, history of abuse
every antecedent is overt or covert, and immediate or distant
stimulus control
extent to which antecedent stimuli can influence performance of particular behaviour
->when stimulus exercises high level of stimulus control, behaviour is highly likely to occur in presence of stimuli
stimulus discrimination training
administering a specific consequence for a behaviour when a stimulus is present, but not when another stimulus is present
discriminative stimulus (Sd)
behaviour is promised to be reinforced
antecedent stimulus (Sdelta)
behaviour is not reinforced
holland and skinner experiment with pigeons
pigeon was placed in operant conditioning chamber. when disk was illuminated with red light and pigeon pecked it, gave food (discriminative stimulus). when illuminated with green light and pigeon pecked it, no food (antecedent stimuli).
real life situations using stimulus discrimination training typically involve ____
multiple antecedent
e.g. passing a car
three term contingency notation
Sr (reinforcement) e.g. Sd -> R -> Sr Sdelta -> R -> nothing *if minus sign behind the r, negative reinforcement. if plus sign, positive reinforcement
stimulus generalization
occurs when a stimulus similar to Sd (discriminative stimulus) also produces a behaviour
generalization gradient
stimuli most similar to Sd produces the strongest response
stimulus equivalence
two or more stimuli can be used for the same purpose.
e.g. number 4 can be written as 4, IV, four, etc.
