Stereochemistry Flashcards
1
Q
When is something chiral?
A
When it cannot be superimposed onto its mirror image.
2
Q
What is a chiral atom?
A
Usually a carbon bonded to 4 different functional groups. So can be bonded to 2 carbons but they must be different functional groups.
3
Q
What is the mirror image of achiral molecule called?
A
Enantiomers
4
Q
What is a stereoisomer?
A
Stereoisomers have a chiral carbon, ie a carbon with 4 unique functional groups.
