Stereochemistry Flashcards
Understand and know the key terms and ideas
Isomers
compounds that have the same molecular formula but are structurally different
Constitutional Isomers
molecules that have the same molecular formula but different bonding patterns and atomic connectivity
Stereoisomers
isomers that differ in spatial arrangement of atoms, rather than order of atomic connectivity
Enantiomers
a pair of molecules that exist in two forms that are mirror images of one another but cannot be superimposed one upon the other
Chiral
it cannot be superposed on its mirror image by any combination of rotations, translations, and some conformational changes
Achiral
it is superimposable, i.e. it can be superimposed on its mirror image
Stereocenter
An atom with four or more different attachments, interchanging of two of these attachments leads to another stereoisomer
(+) Enantiomer
A plane rotating in the clockwise direction
(-) Enantiomer
A plane rotating in the counter-clockwise direction
Racemic Mixture
A plane with no net rotation. It is a 50/50 mixture of (+), and (-) enantiomers.
Racemate
A racemic mixture
Levo Rotatory
Rotation to the left
Dextro Rotatory
Rotation to the right
Enantiopure Sample
A sample consisting of 100% of either (+)/(-) enantiomers
Racemic Sample
A sample with no rotation that contains 50/50 of both (+),(-) enatniomers
