Steotic liver disease Flashcards
What is metabolic dysfunction- associated steatotic liver disease?
fat accumulation in the form of triglycerides within the liver (non-alcoholic fatty liver)
What is recommended in all patients with MASLD/MASH?
Statins:
1. Atorvastatin
2. Pravastatin
Weight loss of 10%
What is an example of intrinsic drug-induced liver disease?
Tylenol
What population does idiosyncratic drug-induced liver disease?
susceptible individuals; less dose-related
What is the antidote for Tylenol overdose?
N-acetylcysteine
What drugs can cause intrinsic drug-induced liver injury?
- isoniazid
- valproate
- azothioprine
What drugs can cause idiosyncratic drug-induced liver disease?
- augmentin
- nitrofurantoin
- phenytoin
- NSAIDs
What group of drugs is the number 2 cause of hepatotoxicity?
herbals/ supplements
What herbals are mainly responsible for hepatotoxicity?
green tea extract
anabolic steroids
What is a condition of iron deposition in the liver?
hemochromatosis
What is Wilson’s disease?
inherited disorder of copper hemostasis
What is the treatment of Wilson’s disease?
copper chelation therapy:
Penicillamine
Trientine
What is fulminant liver failure?
potentially reversible severe liver injury with acute onset encephalopathy and impaired synthetic function
What is the treatment for fulminant liver disease?
- remove the offending cause
- maintain hemodynamic stability
- manage hepatic encephalopathy
- consider factor complex is INR significantly elevated
What are contraindications for a liver transplant?
- life-threatening systemic disease
- active drug/alcohol abuse
