How many components make up a verb?
All verbs have at least TWO parts:
a stem + an infinitive
What are the main components of
stem changing verbs?
Stem changing verbs also have at least two parts:
stem + infinitve
The stem WILL change when conjugated.
The infinitive also changes because:
a) the subject
b) the tense / when the action occured
c) the ending -ar, -er, -ir of the verb
What are the conjugations
for -ar ending verb
in the present tense?
yo > -o
tú > -as
usted, él, ella > -a
nosotros, nosotras > -amos
ustedes, ellos, ellas > -an
For example > hablar
hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, hablan
What are the conjugations
for -er ending verbs in
the present tense?
yo > -o
tú > -es
usted, él, ella > -e
nosotros, nosotras > -emos
ustedes, ellos, ellas > -en
For example > comer
como, comes, come, comemos, comen
What are the conjugations
for -ir ending verbs
in the pesent tense?
yo > -o
tú > -es
usted, él, ella > -e
nosotros, nosotras > -imos
ustedes, ellos, ellas > -en
For example > abrir
abro, abres, abre, abrimos, abren
What are the stem spelling changes for stem changing verbs in the present tense?
There are three groups of stem changes:
- if the stem has an “o” change to “ue”
- if the stem has an “e” change to “ie”
- if the stem has an “e” chagne to “i”
Do ALL subject (yo, ella, ustedes…) change?
NO!
Nosotros, nosotras
(any first person plural)

NO!
