Stem Cells LB Flashcards
What is a stem cell
This is an ‘immature’, undifferentiated non specified cell with the capacity for prolonged or unlimited self renewal
They can differentiate into different cell types
What is differentiation
A process whereby a cell acquired distinctive morphological functional features - determined by gene expression and micro environment. As a result they have specialised functions and then have a limited ability to proliferate
What is an embryonic stem cell
A stem cell from an embryo
Define topipotent
Forms all tissues or an organism including extra embryonic membranes
Define pluripotent
Capable of giving rise to most tissues of an organism
Eg embryonic stem cells, IPS cells
Define multi potent
Adult stem cells capable of forming a restricted number of cell types
Eg Haemtopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, cord blood cells
Define unipotent
Give rise to one cell type
What is asymmetric division
Where a stem cell divides to give 2 daughter cells, one is identical to the parent cell and one has slightly changed
As cells divide there is ———- potency. Which mean there is a ———- range of cell types that the cell can form.
Decreasing
Reduced
What tissues do mesenchymal stem cells give rise to
Musculoskeletal cells
What type of cells do haematopoietic cells give rise to
Blood cells
What is the relationship between proliferation and differentiation
Decreasing proliferation = increasing differentiation
