Stem Cells and Meristems Flashcards
Describe embryonic stem cells.
They are capable of developing into all cell types in the human body. They have the potential to regenerate an entire organ from a few cells.
What are stem cells?
The body’s master cells. They can renew themselves and make a variety of other kinds of cells.
They are either embryonic stem cells or tissue stem cells.
Describe tissue stem cells.
They are only able to replenish the supply of one or more type of cells. Some examples include bone marrow, blood and skin.
Describe how embryonic stem cells begin.
They are derived from three-to-five day old embryos. They are grown in a culture dish until it develops to the blastocyst stage. The inner cell mass is used to derive embryonic stem cells. They then have the potential to give rise to any type of cell in the body.
Name some kinds of tissue stem cells.
Brain, blood, hair follicle, intestine and bone.
What are some pro’s of stem cell technology?
It can treat medical problems and drugs can be tested without human test sunjects.
What are some con’s of stem cell technology?
Stem cells have the potential to become a baby and miscalculation of stem cells can cause the growth of teeth or bones.
What are meristems?
The regions of a plant where growth takes place.
What is primary growth?
It takes place in apical meristems, at the root and shoot tips. The plants increase in height
What is secondary growth?
It takes place in the lateral meristems, the roots and shoots. It increase the girth of the plant. It is the division of cells located between the xylem and phloem in the vascular part of the cell.
