Stem Cells Flashcards
1
Q
What are stem cells?
A
- Stem cells are undifferentiated, meaning they do not have a specific job or function.
- Stem cells have the potential to become all other kinds of cells in your body.
- Stem cells replace worn-out cells when they die.
- Scientists hope stem cells will enable us to create personalised medicine or replace body parts (regenerative medicine).
- They are 3 types of stem cells - tissue-specific (adult stem cells), pluripotent (embryonic stem cells) and induced pluripotent (scientists produce these).
