Digestive Enzymes Flashcards
What enzymes are found in the mouth?
Salivary amylase
What enzymes are found in the stomach?
- Hydrochloric acid
- Pepsin
What enzymes are found in the duodenum?
- pancreatic amylase
- pancreatic lipase
- trypsin
What enzymes are found in the small intestine?
- lactase
- maltase
- sucrase-isomaltase
- peptidase
Pepsin
Pepsin’s optimum pH is acidic, hence it is the only enzyme that works in the pH2 environment of the stomach due to HCl acid.
Enzymes in the body
Enzymes are affected by temperature, which does not need to be controlled as it is constant throughout the body, and pH, which is different throughout the digestive system (eg. stomach is pH2).
What are the carbohydrases?
Amylase, sucrase-isomaltase, maltase, lactase
What are the proteases?
Pepsin, trypsin, peptidase
What are the lipases?
Lipase

Starch breakdown
Starch -(Mouth or Duodenum, Amylase)-> Maltose -(Small intestine, Maltase)-> Glucose
Protein breakdown
Protein -(Proteases)-> Amino Acids
Lipid breakdown
Lipids -(Duodenum, Lipases)-> Fatty acids + Glycerol
