stem cells Flashcards
define a stem cell
an undifferentiated cell that can specialise and develope into new cells
why do STEM cells become specilaised
only become specilised becuase specific genes are expressed and transcribed by mrna
what are the types of STEM cells
- totipotent
- pluripotent
- multipotent
- unipotent
what is a totipotency
where stem cells can specilise into any cell
- found in embryos of humans
what is a pluripotent stem cell
can specilise into most cells except some placenta cells
what is a multipotent stem cell
can only specilise into certain cells such as red blood cells
- found in the bone marrow
what is a unipotent stem cells
can only specilise into one type of cell
what are ips
reprogramed adult body cells to become pluripotent
suggest how transcriptional factors can reprogramme cells to form ips cells
- transcriptional factor binds to dna
- stimulate binding of rna polymerase enabling translation
