Steep Turns Flashcards
What angle constitutes a steep turn?
45 degrees or more
What is airplane load factor? What is the load factor at the surface at rest?
The forces acting on the structure of the aircraft, 1G at the surface of the earth with the airplane at rest
What is the formula for load factor?
Total air load / Weight of the airplane
What are the maneuvering limit load factors for a normal aircraft? Utility aircraft? Acrobatic aircraft?
3.8 positive Gās, 1.52 negative / 4.4+, 1.76- / 6+, 3-
What is the sole determining variable for load factor on a normal aircraft?
Bank Angle, as bank angle increases, load factor does as well
What happens to stall speed as load factor increase?
Stall speed also increases
What is the maximum load factor on a stalled aircraft?
1 G
Describe the maneuvering speed (Va)
The speed at which the airplane stalls before exceeding the design load limits.
What is the relationship between aircraft weight and maneuvering speed?
As weight decreases, so does the maneuvering speed, and vice versa
What is the minimum altitude for steep turns?
1500ā AGL
At what speed should steep turns be performed?
At or below Va (maneuvering speed)
What is a practical steep turn in terms of degrees?
A full 360
What is expected of altitude, bank angle, and airspeed during a steep turn?
Altitude +/- 100 feet, bank angle +/- 5 degrees, airspeed +/- 10 degrees
When should begin rolling out from a steep turn?
25-35 degrees from the reference point
