Pitot Static System Flashcards
How does the airspeed indicator work?
It measures and compares the impact pressure at the pitot tube, versus the static pressure at the static source
What is indicated airspeed?
The airspeed read directly from the airspeed indicator
What is calibrated airspeed?
Airspeed corrected for errors of the airspeed indicator and errors caused by the position of the pitot tube and static source
When is the difference between indicated and calibrated airspeed greatest? Lowest?
Greatest - Slow speeds and with flaps
Lowest - Cruise speed and altitude
Where can a pilot find the calibrated airspeeds?
In the airplane operation manual
What is true airspeed?
Calibrated airspeed corrected for temperature and pressure variation
Where is the only place the airspeed indicator shows true airspeed?
At sea level
What happens to indicated airspeed as altitude increases at the same power settings?
Indicated airspeed decreases
What is a general formula for true airspeed compared to indicated airspeed?
2% increase for every 1000’ altitude
What is Vs? Where is it shown on the airspeed indicator?
Stalling speed, power off, flaps up, maximum weight / The bottom of the green arc
What is Vno? Where is it shown on the airspeed indicator?
Maximum structural cruising speed with flaps up and maximum weight / The top of the green arc
What is Vne? Where is it shown on the airspeed indicator?
Never exceed speed / The top of the yellow arc
What is Vfe? Where is it shown on the airspeed indicator?
Full flap operating range maximum speed / Top of the white arc
What is Vso? Where is it shown on the airspeed indicator?
Power off, full weight, full flaps stall speed / Bottom of the white arc
When should the plane be reduced to maneuvering speed?
In rough air or turbulence
