Steel Story Flashcards
What is disproportionation?
a specific type of redox reaction in which a species is simultaneously reduced and oxidised to form two different products
Give the half equation for the reaction involving iron in the centre of the water drop
Fe(s) —> Fe2+ + 2e-
Give the half equation for the reaction occurring at the edge of a water droplet
4e- + O2(g) + 2H2O —> 4OH-(aq)
Name the standard conditions required for a half cell
1Molar, 1 atm, 298K
What does bidentate mean?
The ligand can for two coordinate bonds rather than one as it has two lone pair of electrons
Explain why some transition metal ion ar coloured
The ions absorb certain frequencies and transmit the complementary colour
True or false: vanadium compounds can act as homogenous catalysts because it can exist in several oxidation states
True
True or false: heterogenous catalysis in vanadium can only use s electrons to form weak bonds on the catalyst surface
False
True or false: homogenous catalysts provide a route of lower activation energy enthalpy for the reaction
True
What is a salt bridge and what is it needed for
Made of filter paper soaked in potassium nitrate(v). Allows the electrical contact between the half cell without the solution mixing
Name the site where oxidation occurs
The anode
Site where reduction occurs
Cathode
Why would a feasible reaction not occur
The rate of reaction may be too slow i.e the activation energy has not been reached
The conditions are not standard
The standard electrode potential may be below 0.4v
What is the process of replacing a ligand called?
Ligand substitution
Factors the affecting colour
Size and type of ligand Strength of metal ligand bonds Complex shape Coordination number Oxidation state
