Steel Flashcards
1
Q
What is Steel?
A
Steel is a mixture of Iron and Carbon (alloy)
2
Q
Plain Carbon Steel is broken up into 3 parts what are they?
A
Low-carbon, Medium Carbon, and high-carbon Steel
3
Q
What are some Qualities of Low Carbon?
A
- %Carbon < 0.25%
- Good Strength
- Good Ductility (easy to deform)
- Structural steel section
- Sheet metal
- Cheap
(Not hardened by heat treatment) (heating and quenching)
4
Q
What are some Qualities of Medium Carbon?
A
- %Carbon 0.25%-0.6%
- Stronger but harder to deform and cut
- Used for machine parts (gears, shafts, camshafts…)
(Responds to hardening by heat treatment)
5
Q
What are some Qualities of High Carbon?
A
- %Carbon 0.6% - 1.4%
- Used for tools and dies
(Responds to hardening by heat treatment)
6
Q
What are the Designations of Tool Steels?
A
H: Hot working tool steels
W: Water-hardening tool steel
O: oil-hardening tool steel
A: Air-hardening tool steel
T: high-speed steel based on Tungstun
M: High-speed steel based on molybdenum
S: Shack resistance tool steel
