Steam Sterilization Flashcards
Five critical factors of steam sterilization
Time, Contact, Temperature, moisture and pressure
Geobacillus stearothermophilus
spores are killed in 12 minutes at 250 degrees F
Two types of Steam Sterilizers
Gravity Displacement Sterilizer (slower)
Prevaccuum Steam Sterilizer (AKA dynamic-air-removal autoclave)
Temp. and pressure of gravity sterilizer
250-275 degrees = 15-17lbs/sq.in. (psi)
Temp. and pressure of prevaccuum sterilizer
270-275 = 27-30psi
Best place to put an indicator
in the corners because it is the hardest place to be sterilized, it is the greatest challenge that exists
What bacteria is in the BI that?
Geobacillus stearothermophilus
Wet pack or instrument set must be considered
contaminated. The cause must be investigated and corrected.
ETO
ethlyne oxide
gas sterilization used to process plastic/rubber
contains Bacillus atrophaeus
Sterrad
uses gas at low temperature to sterilize sensitive items
BI: Bacillus atrophaeus killer
HPGP
Steris System 1E
Semi-critical patient care items
cannot be stored, for immediate use only
BI: geobacillus stearothermophilus
Ionizing Radiation
death of all microbes by disrupting their DNA
Immediate use steam sterilization
“flash” sterilization… really quick
