Steam and Boilers Flashcards
What are some boiler mountings
Water level indicator/gauge glass - check water level
Pressure gauge - measure the pressure in the main steam drum
Safety valve - relieves excess
Steam stop valve - controls flow of steam
Feedwater valve - controls feedwater going into the boiler
Blow down valve - allows the sight glass to be drained or “blown down”
Fusible plug - melts if temperature is too high to relieve pressure
Manhole - required for cleaning
Air release vents - used to prevent implosion of boiler when depressurising or initially pressurising
Scum valve - allows drainage of foam and other impurities and water level
Soot blowers - allows for blowing of soot off of boiler tube surfaces
Water sampling valve - sample point for boiler water
What is the purpose of blowing down a boiler sight glass
To ensure that the readings remain and class is clear of sediment
What is the procedure for blowing down a sight glass
Close steam and water cocks
Open drain cock to drain the sight glass
Slowly open steam cock to blow through the sight glass until it runs clean then close
Slowly open water cock until it runs clean then close
Close drain cock
Open water valve slowly
Open steam valve slowly
Let the water level settle
What happens if flame failure occurs in a boiler
the fuel feed will cut off to stop the hot well from filling up with unburnt fuel
How would you clean a boiler hot well before reigniting if the fuel didn’t get cut off
Ensure that the fuel is actually cut off before work
Drain hot well of fuel
Swab out any excess that did not drain
Ventilate the space to purge the hot well of any fuel and air mixture that could explode
Ask chief’s permission before reignition
What are some boiler water tests
pH level
Chloride
Phenol alkalinity
Total dissolved solids
Water hardness
